In February 2025 the University of Liverpool Maths School (ULMaS) was recognised as one of the highest-performing schools in the country (state or independent) for value added  – a measure of students’ progress – in the latest performance tables published by the Department for Education (DfE) based on A-Levels taken in summer 2024. See further information here.

Today the school publishes its latest set of results which show continued excellence from  merseyside students in the mathematical sciences:

Summer 2025 A-Levels:

  • 44% of students achieved 3 or more A* or A grades
  • 68% of students achieved 3 or more A*, A or B grades
  • 82 % of A-Level entries achieved A*, A or B grades
  • 58 % of A-Level entries achieved A* or A grades
  • 48 % of students achieved at least AAB in facilitating subjects
  • 29 % of A-Level entries achieved A* grades
  • The average grade across all entries was A-
  • 8 students achieved all A* grades - one in every six students
  • 12% of students will progress to places at Oxford or Cambridge

Headteacher Damian Haigh said:

“Students and their parents are rightly proud of the excellent results that have been published today.  School staff have enjoyed working with this wonderful group of students for the last two years and, while we will be very sorry to see them go, we share their excitement about the future: we know that these young people are going to have a great impact on the world over the next few decades.  These results are a great achievement of which they should be very proud, but as staff we see much more progress than that which is described by these grades. We have seen them develop in self confidence and intellectual curiosity and watched them make friends that they will keep for the rest of their lives. These students have generously given their time and energy to support our outreach programme, helping ensure that young people from disadvantaged areas of Merseyside have access to inspiration and enrichment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are delighted to have been a small part of their journeys and look forward to hearing their updates over the next few years.

This summer also sees the graduation of many members of the first cohort of students who helped us to establish the school in 2020.  We are looking forward to tracking their careers in academia, industry and wherever else their skills and interests will take them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the very kind and hard working team of staff that has challenged, supported and nurtured these young people over the last few years. I would also like to thank our trustees for their continued support and guidance, which has been instrumental in shaping the school’s success.

Lastly I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Steve and Linda Garnett, our generous donors who have helped the school to expand its outreach work and ensure that students who would otherwise have struggled financially over the last two years have been able to participate fully in everything that the school has to offer.

Chair of Trustees Dr Kathleen Johnson said:

“As Chair of Trustees I am delighted with these results and I would like to congratulate the students and thank all of the staff for the challenge and support that they have provided for students. Our students are heading to a wide range of exciting destinations, including leading universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, as well as other top institutions and industry placements. We celebrate all of these paths equally, as each reflects the unique strengths, interests and aspirations of our students.”

Individual Students:

The following students give some examples of the achievements and future plans of our students.

Ahmad Adebowale achieved straight A* grades in A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.  He plans to study computer science at Queens’ College, Cambridge.

“Ahmad was an outstanding student who took on many additional challenges outside of the classroom, winning several significant coding competitions over the last two years and contributing a great deal to school life in different ways. He had to overcome significant health challenges around the time of his examinations so we are even more delighted to see that he achieved this perfect set of results.” Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Cameron Clarke achieved straight A* grades in A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.  He plans to study computer science at the University of Manchester.

“Cameron is a student who frequently went out of his way to support fellow students and help the staff at school.  A generous and thoughtful individual, he has both natural talent and the capacity to work hard: we look forward with excitement to seeing his achievements over the next few years.” Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Aiko Hoshiko achieved straight A* grades in A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics.  She plans to study physics at the University of Bristol.

“Aiko has brought so much to this school; we will be very sad to see her go.  We thank her for her excellent contributions to student leadership in school and for the many things that she created and cultivated in her time with us.  She is talented, ambitious and thoughtful and has a wonderful future ahead of her.” Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Tatiana Kurlina achieved straight A* grades in A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.  She plans to study mathematics at University College, London.

“Tatiana has been such a mature and considerate presence in the school that we often think of her as an extra member of staff.  We thank her for her excellent contributions to school life, especially the musical and charitable fund raising events.  She is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met and has a wonderful future ahead of her.” Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Jamie Little achieved straight A* grades in A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.  He plans to study computer science at at St Johns’ College, Cambridge

“Jamie has achieved a great deal of success in competitions and other extra curricular activities and has been a cheerful and optimistic influence on the school community.  He has been an academic high flier throughout his time here and this extraordinary level of success seems never to have been in doubt.” Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Grace Spelman achieved A* grades in A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and grade A in A-Level Physics.  She plans to study economics and management at St Hilda’s College, Oxford.

“It has been such a pleasure to see Grace grow in self confidence and academic performance over the last two years.  Talented and determined, she will thrive at Oxford and beyond”. Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Connah Power achieved straight A* in  A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics.  He plans to study mathematics at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

“Connah is an exceptional student.  He came to us having already learned a great deal of mathematics, and we have enjoyed supporting his continued development in many different areas.  He is academically formidable but also a fun and helpful young man and we look forward to hearing of much more success in the future.”  Damian Haigh, Headteacher

Alfie Thomson achieved straight A* in  A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics.  He plans to study mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge.

“An exceptionally talented young mathematician who has developed so much more confidence in the last two years.  We have enjoyed his musical and social contributions to school life as much as his excellence in mathematics and science.” Damian Haigh, Headteacher
